Calling all book buffs and storage sensationalists! In an age where electronic tablets and Kindles are giving published books the redundancy treatment, we at Wishtank are protesting against it!  Your favourite written stories should never get knocked off their shelves!  No siree – quite the contrary… we say, “Rack ’em, pack ’em and stack ’em!”. There’s something still decidedly ‘novel’ about having books around the home… it really cranks ups the cosy factor, not to mention it gives you a fabulous excuse to build or buy shelving in its many forms on offer.

In fact, you don’t even have to be an intellectual bookworm to appreciate a well-constructed shelf area.  Even if the only thing you ever read are wine labels (let’s be friends?), you’re still in our good books! As far as we’re concerned, every home-dweller should find a place for open shelving – they add style, personality and warmth; they often only require a small area of space – probably unused anyway and, done properly, it can really enhance the look and feel of the room.

So on that note, we invite all you fellow design lovers on a journey of Shelf Discovery… stay with us a while as Wishtank delves into the wonderful world of shelves!

FRAMEWORK | WINDOWS & DOORS

Sometimes, you’ve just got to work with the architecture you’ve been given. That might mean building a designated bookcase around a chosen door or window frame. Have a look at the examples in the photos to the left… now imagine how dull each image would be without those shelving wonders! (Makes you think, doesn’t it?)

STAIRS WORTH STARING

If your home has a staircase with unused space under it, you’ve found your perfect book nook! In the case of space and budget being abundant, add a fully built-in custom bookshelf (a stylish reading chair here will also be a tasty touch). But smaller-scale shelving will work just as well: buy some ready-made, shop-bought shelving, combine it with a mini gallery wall, add a key selection of books and decoratives and you have a focal point to be proud of!

DIVIDE AND CONQUER

Whether half-height or floor-to-ceiling, shelving remains a top technique in taking one big space and stylishly making it two.  This is an especially nifty trick if you’re in a rental – no permanent structure needed!

BOOKSHELF BACKDROPS ARE TOP!

A feature wall of books? Talk about a great look! The trick is to stack some books vertically, some horizontally and then add in a few choice nik-naks (decoratives, not Simba chips… that would be weird) and you have created a visually pleasing nook for your books… not to mention you now appear at least 34.6% more intelligent to your visitors.

LIMITED SPACE? RECESSED IS BEST!

There are few design elements that speak louder to the fact that you’ve thought out every last centimeter of your space than the element of recessed shelving. They are particularly fantastic in kids’ rooms (“We’ve got too much storage space in here” – said no mother ever.), bathrooms, bedrooms (where bedside tables can become overcrowded) and casual banquet seating areas. If you’re about to build or renovate, do yourselves the favour and find a wall cavity for some shelves that would otherwise have been wasted space – you’re welcome!

THEY'RE KINDA 'KIFF' IN THE KITCHEN!

Three reasons why open shelving help keep your kitchen too cool for school:

1. No doors + no fancy hardware = kinder on the wallet;
2. Displayed objects inject personality better than any cupboard door would be able to; and
3. Easy access to your well-used goods in the kitchen. The open/close dance can get a little dull, so having open shelves means there’s no need to cha-cha for your atcha.
